I quickly snapped this image of the illuminated Rosslyn Hotel last night, since it'll only be lit (as far as I know) until Monday night/Tuesday morning.

rosslyn hotel neon

There's a much bigger image here in my flickr account.

We had to put a couple of generators on the roof of the hotel in order to get the sign lit up, and I'm sure the landlord won't pay to have it stay lit after we're done shooting our film. So enjoy it while it lasts!

(The sign on the right is purposely "flawed" with damaged neon to reflect a real downtown LA skyline.)

Beside The Edison, what are some other fun places for tonight Downtown?
Anyone know what’s happening at Bordello’s tonight? We went a few Saturday’s ago and it was empty. Such a cool place though!

Downtown Living.

So I have been seriously looking into buying a loft in the Historic Core of Downtown.
I wanted to see if anyone is already living there and could share some experience with me.

One of my main concerns are my children.
I was looking on the LAUSD website and there doesn’t seem schools in the immediate area. LA parents what are your thoughts on this type of environment? Mind you we don’t live to far from Downtown now, but my kids have their school one block from our house and they also have other children as next-door neighbors. All the lofts we have looked at so far seem to be mostly adults living in the building no children, at least none that I have seen. And what about pets?

I don’t have a problem driving to Silverlake, USC area or East LA for groceries until that new Ralphs “they” speak of is built Downtown but I am wondering what people do for groceries. Especially if you are buying them in bulks like a family does. I wouldn’t want my parking spot two blocks away and need to carry everything down the street! Or worse get a parking ticket for parking in the loading! *smiles*

Also how do you handle a situation like last Tuesday’s May Day marches and Downtown gets pretty much shut off and inaccessible. I’ll need to get to work to pay for said loft and I don’t work in downtown.

Lately my husband and I have been checking out all the latest hot spots and restaurants downtown and there are so many fun places. We like being able to walk to places we want to go to, especially now that gas is getting so outrageous!

Any insight anyone cares to share would be greatly appreciated. I have always loved Downtown and I am so happy to see the new life breathed into it.

So far my favorite building in The Eastern Columbia and The Bartlett.
Little Tokyo has some cool place too!

grocery home delivery?

Anyone who lives downtown LA get their groceries delivered to their apt/condo/loft?? Still looking forward to Ralph's opening up on Flower but until then we're finding ourselves in the unenviable position of contemplating home delivery.. Usually we drive to TJ's in WeHo or the Von's in K-town or something (I think that's where it is) or we go to the Albertsons in Atwater Village/ Los Feliz area (they have a Costco too) but hubby has the car and I may be needing at some point in the future (not necessarily this time around) to get food.

When we lived in the Bay Area we loved Webvan but they've been out of business for ages and homegrocer.com also is gone (which was suggested by a friend for when she lived in Pasadena..before Webvan bought them out I guess). Our choices are Albertsons I think and Vons (Ralph's??) for home delivery.. does anyone have any experience with either one, and second question if you have.. how much does one have to buy to make it worth the $10 delivery charge??

I guess a 3rd question would be.. if not one of these ones, does anyone know of another grocery delivery that they can recommend??

Thanks very much!

"My First Mugging"

Saturday night, a friend of mine and I walked from our loft over to a nearby bar, just like we've done the past 4 weekends, and this time, fate wasn't on our side.
I ended up getting mugged, luckily without threats and violence.

The jerk ran up behind me and grabbed my purse off my arm. He had a car waiting, which pulled up right next to us, and they sped off.
Luckily my assailant was a moron, and dropped HIS phone. Which had pictures of him, his car, and the driver on it. Which is now with the LAPD.

All this wouldn't have happened if one of the 3 cabs I called decided to show up in the 40 minutes we waited for them. Lame.

Have you experienced this kind of violence downtown? What do you do to protect yourself?
I know I shouldn't be walking around at night - but I hate curbing my interests and plans simply because of where I live.

Here it is, this little fledgling Downtown LA community!
Help out: post, plan, read, meet - I'd like to have a good resource for life out here. I've never moderated a community before, so this will all be pretty loose.

A little about me:
I started working downtown at the beginning of 2006, and I just fell for it. I moved here more recently. I live in the Santa Fe Lofts, at 6th & Main (across from Cole's and the P.E. Lofts)
I left the westside, near the Bev. Center, for the urban life, and I couldn't be happier. Sure, it's inconvenient, sure there's sketchy types, but I believe in downtown & I love seeing and hearing about all the projects in progress to bring back it's splendor. There's a nice sense of youthful community here, and great secret-little-spots to pass the time. I have no more excuses for missing exhibits at the MOCA, and I actually can make use of the Central Library. I can walk to work, which is unheard of in LA, and I am finally close to a subway stop.
I'm trying to live, work, play - the whole deal - down here, so I'm still ironing out a lot of details: What's a good bar? Where do I get dry cleaning done? Is Vons the best for grocery delivery? What new projects are getting started? What retail is opening up on the ground floor of my building? Where do I meet people? What's the San Antonio Winery like? What lunch spot did you just discover? Is getting to Pasadena on the subway faster & easier than driving? Can I make friends with someone in the P.E. Lofts and use their pool?

I'm learning a lot about downtown, and seeing great stuff everyday. I just want a place to share all that. I'll still be using the Los Angeles Community, so I guess some things will be cross-posted.
